Jongens zonder koevoet (Boys without jemmy’s) (2024)
Short documentary
An unpolished documentary, that follows a 17-year-old boy in Amsterdam. Through the eyes of his older sister, we look at him as he navigates the complexities of manhood and autonomy.

Luk was in his final year of highschool when I asked if I could make a film about him. As his sister, I’ve watched him grow up, but always from the distance a family member inevitably has. COVID hit when he was twelve, so he spent most of his first years of highschool (and of puberty) in his bedroom, behind a computer screen. In the two years before we started filming, though, he had built a tight-knit group of friends, and with them he was going through the transitions that, in one way or another, we have all lived through.
As a woman, watching these boys figure out who they are from that close felt like a rare privilege, and something I wanted to capture.
Now, almost three years later, the film feels like a time capsule. It is a sensitive portrait, not only of a boy searching for his identity, but also of a moment in time: 2024, a generation growing up with social media, navigating a shifting gender culture, just before AI became part of everything.
